Laboratory test

Chlamydia RNA/TMA

Screens for chlamydia infection.

About this test

This molecular test looks for chlamydia genetic material at the sampled site.

Common reasons for testing

  • Screening based on age and exposure risk, or evaluation after exposure.

These are examples of clinical uses. Your history and symptoms determine whether testing is appropriate.

What to expect

You provide a urine specimen or an appropriate swab, according to the order and available collection method.

Appointment length

Your visit is expected to take about 15 minutes at our West Ashley location.

STI & Infectious Disease

Preparation

  • Confirm whether urine or a swab is needed. Urine testing generally uses the first part of the stream, not a midstream clean-catch sample.
  • Follow the collection kit instructions about time since last urination.

Instructions for this appointment

  • A urine sample will be collected at your appointment. Please plan to arrive with a full bladder.

Follow the instructions confirmed for your order. If they differ from the general guidance, contact the team before changing food, fluids, or medicines.

Order requirement

No outside order needed

Understanding your results

  • A genital sample does not exclude infection in the throat or rectum. Discuss exposure sites.

What happens next?

Review the report with your clinician alongside your symptoms, medical history, and earlier results. A value outside the reference range does not always mean disease, and a normal result does not explain every symptom. Confirm who will arrange any repeat or additional testing.
