About this test
A fecal immunochemical test checks a small stool sample for hidden blood as part of colorectal cancer screening.
Common reasons for testing
- An option for average-risk screening, commonly from age 45, after discussing the right strategy with a clinician.

What to expect
You collect a small stool sample using the supplied kit, usually at home, and return it as directed.

Preparation
- Follow the kit directions for collection, labeling, and return timing. FIT generally needs no diet restriction or bowel preparation.
- Keep the sample separate from urine and toilet water. Ask about collection if you are menstruating or have visible bleeding.

Understanding your results
- A positive result needs colonoscopy. Repeating FIT does not cancel a positive result.
- A negative test does not exclude cancer or explain visible bleeding. FIT screening requires regular repetition, usually yearly.

Arrange review of the result. A positive result requires timely colonoscopy; persistent symptoms need evaluation even with a negative FIT.
