GBS Swab
Screens for Group B Strep, typically performed late in pregnancy.
About this test
A vaginal and rectal swab checks for Group B Streptococcus carriage late in pregnancy to help plan care during labor.
Common reasons for testing
- Prenatal screening, usually at 36 weeks 0 days through 37 weeks 6 days, coordinated by your obstetric clinician.
These are examples of clinical uses. Your history and symptoms determine whether testing is appropriate.

Appointment length
Your visit is expected to take about 15 minutes at our West Ashley location.

Preparation
- No fasting is needed. Confirm pregnancy week and tell the team about antibiotic allergies and previous GBS results.
Instructions for this appointment
- A vaginal/rectal swab will be collected at your appointment.
Follow the instructions confirmed for your order. If they differ from the general guidance, contact the team before changing food, fluids, or medicines.
Order requirement
No outside order needed
Understanding your results
- A positive result usually means carriage, not that you are ill. It guides antibiotics during labor.
- A prior infant with GBS disease or GBS in urine may change the plan.
What happens next?
Make sure your obstetric team and delivery facility receive the result and document any plan for labor.
