About this test
This test measures the amount of hCG in blood and may be used with ultrasound and repeat measurements in early pregnancy.
Common reasons for testing
- Clarifying a possible early pregnancy.
- Clinician-directed follow-up when early pregnancy location or progression is uncertain.

What to expect
A small blood sample is taken from a vein in your arm. You may feel a brief pinch and have mild bruising. Tell the person collecting your sample if you have fainted with needles or take a blood thinner; keep pressure on the site afterward.

- No fasting is usually needed. Bring previous hCG results, dates of ultrasound scans, and any fertility-treatment dates.
- Bring a list of medicines and supplements, including biotin, vitamins, and hormones. Do not stop or change prescribed medicines unless your clinician tells you to.

- A single hCG value cannot establish pregnancy location or viability. Trends and ultrasound may be needed.
What happens next?
Review the report with your clinician alongside your symptoms, medical history, and earlier results. A value outside the reference range does not always mean disease, and a normal result does not explain every symptom. Confirm who will arrange any repeat or additional testing.
When to seek care sooner
Possible pregnancy with severe pain, shoulder pain, fainting, or heavy bleeding needs emergency evaluation, not a scheduled lab draw.
