An abdominal aortic ultrasound is a quick, painless imaging exam that uses sound waves to create pictures of the aorta — the large blood vessel that runs through your abdomen — to evaluate its size and appearance.
What the exam evaluates
- The size and appearance of the abdominal aorta
- Evidence of an abdominal aortic aneurysm (enlargement)
- Changes compared with prior imaging, when available
Common reasons to request it
- Routine monitoring of known abdominal aortic aneurysm
- Known aortic atherosclerosis, plaque, or calcification

Approximate duration

- Continue your regular medications unless a provider tells you otherwise.
- Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to your abdomen.
- Bring any prior imaging reports or your physician order if you have them.
