A bladder ultrasound evaluates the bladder for emptying problems, wall changes, stones, and other findings related to urinary symptoms.
What the exam evaluates

- Feeling that the bladder does not empty completely
- Weak or hesitant urinary stream
- Lower pelvic/bladder pressure or discomfort
- Known bladder wall abnormality

- Microscopic blood in urine
Approximate duration
Most exams take about 20 to 30 minutes once approved. You can typically return to normal activities immediately afterward.
What to expect
A qualified sonographer or physician applies a warm gel to the skin and moves a small handheld probe over the area. The exam is non-invasive and painless, and you can typically return to normal activities immediately afterward.

- You may be asked to arrive with a comfortably full bladder for the clearest images.
- Continue your regular medications unless a provider tells you otherwise.
- Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.
- Bring any prior imaging reports or your physician order if you have them.
