Carotid Artery Ultrasound
A carotid ultrasound uses sound waves to evaluate the carotid arteries in your neck, assessing blood flow and looking for plaque that can affect stroke risk.
What the exam evaluates
- Blood flow through the carotid arteries
- Plaque buildup or narrowing (stenosis)
- Changes compared with prior imaging, when available
Common reasons to request it
- Non-acute follow-up after previous stroke or TIA
- Known carotid plaque or stenosis
- Previous carotid surgery or stenting
- Current or former smoker
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
Approximate duration
Most exams take about 20 to 30 minutes once approved. You can typically return to normal activities immediately afterward.
What to expect
A qualified sonographer or physician applies a warm gel to the skin and moves a small handheld probe over the area. The exam is non-invasive and painless, and you can typically return to normal activities immediately afterward.
How to prepare
When approved
- No fasting is required — you may eat, drink, and take your regular medications as usual.
- Avoid caffeine and nicotine for about 1 hour before your exam, since they can temporarily affect blood flow readings.
- Wear a loose, open-collared top and avoid necklaces so the clinician has easy access to your neck.
- Bring any prior imaging reports or your physician order if you have them.
