Outpatient Ultrasound

Complete Abdominal Ultrasound

A complete abdominal ultrasound provides a comprehensive look at the abdominal organs, including the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, and kidneys.

What the exam evaluates

  • The liver, gallbladder, and bile ducts
  • The pancreas and spleen
  • The kidneys and surrounding structures

Common reasons to request it

  • General abdominal health / proactive evaluation

Approximate duration

Most exams take about 30 to 45 minutes once approved. You can typically return to normal activities immediately afterward.

What to expect

A qualified sonographer or physician applies a warm gel to the skin and moves a small handheld probe over the area. The exam is non-invasive and painless, and you can typically return to normal activities immediately afterward.

How to prepare

When approved

  • Avoid eating for several hours before your exam when possible, to reduce abdominal gas.
  • Continue your regular medications unless a provider tells you otherwise.
  • Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to your abdomen.
  • Bring any prior imaging reports or your physician order if you have them.
