Outpatient Ultrasound

Pelvic Ultrasound

A pelvic ultrasound evaluates the uterus and ovaries for pelvic symptoms or known findings. It is typically performed through the lower abdomen. A transvaginal portion may also be performed when clinically appropriate and only with your consent.

What the exam evaluates

  • The uterus and its lining
  • The ovaries
  • Known fibroids, cysts, or other findings

Common reasons to request it

  • Pelvic pain or cramping
  • Pelvic fullness or bloating
  • Menstrual changes
  • Post-menopausal bleeding
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Known fibroids

Approximate duration

Most exams take about 30 to 45 minutes once approved. You can typically return to normal activities immediately afterward.

What to expect

The exam typically begins with imaging through the lower abdomen. When clinically appropriate, a qualified sonographer or physician may offer a transvaginal portion using a slim, covered internal probe for additional detail. It is performed only with your consent, and may be deferred if you decline, cannot tolerate it, or it is not appropriate. You may ask to stop at any time.

How to prepare

When approved

  • This exam must be scheduled at least three days in advance so the appropriate sonographer can be available.
  • You may be asked to arrive with a comfortably full bladder for the transabdominal portion.
  • If a transvaginal portion is appropriate and consented to, you may be asked to empty your bladder first.
  • Continue your regular medications unless a provider tells you otherwise.
  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Bring any prior imaging reports or your physician order if you have them.
