Lower Extremity Ultrasound
A lower extremity ultrasound is a non-vascular soft-tissue and musculoskeletal exam. It is not a vascular Doppler exam. Each anatomical area you select is a separate ultrasound.
What the exam evaluates
- Superficial masses
- Muscles and tendons
- Fluid collections
- Other non-vascular soft-tissue abnormalities
Common reasons to request it
- A palpable lump or mass
- Localized swelling
- Non-severe soft-tissue pain or tenderness
- Follow-up of a known soft-tissue finding
Approximate duration
Most exams take about 15 to 30 minutes once approved. You can typically return to normal activities immediately afterward.
What to expect
A qualified sonographer or physician applies a warm gel to the skin and moves a small handheld probe over the area. The exam is non-invasive and painless, and you can typically return to normal activities immediately afterward.
Areas you can select
Each area and side is a separate ultrasound and is priced separately. These studies are not automatically bilateral.
How to prepare
When approved
- Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being examined.
- Continue your regular medications unless a provider tells you otherwise.
- Bring any prior imaging reports or your physician order if you have them.
