A renal (kidney) ultrasound uses sound waves to evaluate the kidneys — and often the bladder — for stones, cysts, and other changes.
What the exam evaluates
- The size and appearance of the kidneys
- Kidney stones, cysts, or other findings
- Changes compared with prior imaging, when available
Common reasons to request it
- Known or prior kidney stones
- Recurrent urinary tract infections
- Follow-up of a known kidney cyst
- Elevated kidney-function laboratory findings
- Microscopic blood in urine
- Non-severe flank or back discomfort
Approximate duration
Most exams take about 20 to 30 minutes once approved. You can typically return to normal activities immediately afterward.
What to expect
A qualified sonographer or physician applies a warm gel to the skin and moves a small handheld probe over the area. The exam is non-invasive and painless, and you can typically return to normal activities immediately afterward.
How to prepare
When approved
- You may be asked to arrive with a comfortably full bladder for the clearest images.
- Continue your regular medications unless a provider tells you otherwise.
- Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.
- Bring any prior imaging reports or your physician order if you have them.
