Scrotal / Testicular Ultrasound

Scrotal ultrasound examines the testicles and surrounding tissues, often including blood flow.

What the exam evaluates

  • The testicles and epididymis
  • Lumps, cysts, or varicoceles
  • Non-severe swelling or discomfort

Common reasons for this exam

  • A persistent testicular or scrotal lump.
  • Non-acute swelling or discomfort after clinical assessment.
  • Follow-up of a known fluid collection or varicocele (enlarged veins).

Approximate duration

Most exams take about 20 to 30 minutes once approved. You can typically return to normal activities immediately afterward.

What to expect

You lie on your back with the scrotum supported and nearby areas draped. Gel and a small probe are used on the skin. Tell the sonographer about tenderness, and ask about a chaperone if you would like one.

How to prepare

Follow your appointment instructions

  • This exam must be scheduled at least three days in advance so the appropriate sonographer can be available.
  • No fasting is usually needed for this exam.
  • Wear clothing that gives easy access to the area being scanned. Bring earlier imaging reports and your order, if available.
  • Continue prescribed medicines unless your clinician gives different instructions. Tell the team about pain, limited mobility, or positioning needs.

Understanding your results

  • Imaging findings need clinical interpretation; not every lump has the same cause.
  • Sudden pain is time-sensitive and must not be routed to routine outpatient scheduling.

What happens next?

A radiologist interprets the images. Review the report and any recommended next steps with your clinician. The sonographer may not be able to give a diagnosis during the appointment. Persistent symptoms still need follow-up even when the scan is normal.

When to seek care sooner

Sudden or severe testicular pain, especially with nausea, needs immediate emergency evaluation for possible torsion.
