Thyroid Ultrasound
A thyroid ultrasound evaluates the thyroid gland in the front of the neck for nodules, enlargement, and other changes.
What the exam evaluates
- The size and texture of the thyroid gland
- Nodules or cysts
- Changes compared with prior imaging, when available
Common reasons to request it
- Palpable thyroid nodule or lump
- Follow-up of a known thyroid nodule
- Neck fullness or thyroid enlargement (goiter)
- Abnormal thyroid laboratory findings
- Family history of thyroid cancer
Approximate duration
Most exams take about 20 to 30 minutes once approved. You can typically return to normal activities immediately afterward.
What to expect
A qualified sonographer or physician applies a warm gel to the skin and moves a small handheld probe over the area. The exam is non-invasive and painless, and you can typically return to normal activities immediately afterward.

- Continue your regular medications unless a provider tells you otherwise.
- Bring any prior imaging reports or your physician order if you have them.
