OB First Trimester Ultrasound
Early pregnancy ultrasound can assess pregnancy location, number of embryos, and dating. What can be seen depends on how far along the pregnancy is. Routine, uncomplicated requests may qualify without an outside OB order after clinical review.

- Routine dating of an otherwise uncomplicated pregnancy, including uncertain menstrual dates, after clinical review.
- Assessment of pregnancy location and number of embryos when clinically appropriate.
- Uncomplicated follow-up without concerning prior findings after clinical review.
- Follow-up of inconclusive or abnormal imaging only with an outside OB-provider order and appropriate follow-up.
Approximate duration
Most exams take about 30 to 45 minutes once approved. You can typically return to normal activities immediately afterward.
What to expect
Imaging may be performed through the abdomen. An internal vaginal scan may be offered with your consent when additional detail is needed; the bladder is usually emptied first. You may decline or stop an internal scan. Confirm the planned approach with the team.
How to prepare
Follow your appointment instructions
- This exam must be scheduled at least three days in advance so the appropriate sonographer can be available.
- You may need a comfortably full bladder. Follow the appointment instructions for how much to drink and when; do not force fluids if you have a fluid restriction.
- Tell the team if you cannot comfortably hold urine. They can advise you before starting.
- Wear clothing that gives easy access to the area being scanned. Bring earlier imaging reports and your order, if available.
- Continue prescribed medicines unless your clinician gives different instructions. Tell the team about pain, limited mobility, or positioning needs.
- Bring the date of your last period, fertility-treatment dates, and any prior pregnancy scans or blood-test results you already have.
- Quantitative serum beta-hCG is optional when recommended by the clinical team; it is not a routine prerequisite or automatically added to your booking. It has an additional cost if you choose testing.
No Order Needed — clinical review before confirmation
Routine, uncomplicated pregnancy ultrasounds may qualify without an outside order after clinical review. Pregnancy complications, concerning symptoms, or unclear history or findings require an outside OB-provider order and appropriate follow-up. Our team may recommend an optional beta-hCG blood test at an additional cost; it is never automatically added.

- An early scan may be inconclusive because the pregnancy is younger than expected. Repeat imaging may be needed.
- A single beta-hCG value cannot confirm pregnancy location or viability. When indicated, serial testing and close follow-up require obstetric oversight.
- Multiple gestation, symptoms, uncertain viability, or other concerning findings require an outside OB-provider order and appropriate follow-up.
What happens next?
A radiologist interprets the images. Review the report and any recommended next steps with your clinician. The sonographer may not be able to give a diagnosis during the appointment. Persistent symptoms still need follow-up even when the scan is normal. This outpatient ultrasound does not replace ongoing prenatal care. When to seek care sooner
Severe one-sided pain, shoulder pain, fainting, or heavy bleeding in pregnancy needs emergency evaluation. Do not wait for a scheduled scan.
