Outpatient Ultrasound

OB Third Trimester Ultrasound

An OB third trimester ultrasound evaluates fetal growth, position, and well-being later in pregnancy, when clinically appropriate.

OB ultrasound precaution

Questions about pregnancy viability, miscarriage, or fetal demise require an accompanying quantitative hCG result and close follow-up with an obstetric clinician.

What the exam evaluates

  • Fetal growth and estimated weight
  • Amniotic fluid
  • Position and presentation

Common reasons to request it

  • Routine growth and well-being follow-up
  • Position or presentation check
  • Amniotic fluid check
  • Non-urgent reassurance of fetal movement

Approximate duration

Most exams take about 30 to 45 minutes once approved. You can typically return to normal activities immediately afterward.

What to expect

A qualified sonographer or physician applies a warm gel to the skin and moves a small handheld probe over the area. The exam is non-invasive and painless, and you can typically return to normal activities immediately afterward.

How to prepare

When approved

  • This exam must be scheduled at least three days in advance so the appropriate sonographer can be available.
  • You may be asked to arrive with a comfortably full bladder for the clearest images.
  • Continue your regular medications unless a provider tells you otherwise.
  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Bring any prior imaging reports or your physician order if you have them.
